Here’s a simple recipe for crumbed sausages, which in posh households is known as ‘bangers a’ la crumb’. All you need is 500g sausages, 1 egg, flour, breadcrumbs, oil for frying, and salt and pepper. Boil your favourite sausages for 5 minutes. Allow to cool, then peel off the skin. Roll the now skinless sausages in seasoned flour, dip in the slightly beaten egg, and roll in breadcrumbs. Fry until golden brown.

Another way to turn a simple oily rag sausage into a taste-sensual sensation is to wrap it in flaky pastry and bake it. There is no need to precook the sausage. Slice the pasty into a long strip about 25mm wide. Roll it around the sausage diagonally so it overlaps, to fully or almost fully cover the sausage – it doesn’t matter if the end bits poke out. Place it on a baking tray and brush on an egg glaze then sprinkle with poppy seeds. Bake in a moderate oven until the pasty is golden brown – which will be about 15 or so minutes. Try different flavoured sausages. So yum – and great for an afternoon treat or as party food.

Did you know the 23rd of July is National Hotdog Day – well in the United States it is! We think having a hot dog day may be a sizzling good idea for charities here in oilyragaroa to get out onto the streets to raise funds for their good causes.

Typically hot dogs are boiled sausages in a bread roll with oodles of mustard and tomato sauce and dollops of onion – but there are lots of ways to “dress up a ‘dog”, so let us know if you have a favourite hotdog recipe and we will share it with others.

For a family of four, you will need: a regular can of baked beans, 4 to 6 cooked sausages, sliced thinly, a bell pepper, diced (you could use 1/2 red pepper and 1/2 green pepper for added colour), and some lettuce leaves (stacked together and sliced thinly). Empty the baked beans into a microwave bowl and add the sliced sausages. Cover with microwave-safe cling wrap and leave a small opening. Microwave for about 2 minutes on high or until heated through. Then use a spoon to mix the sausages and baked beans well. Microwave the peppers for about 2 minutes on high, then mix half of the cooked peppers into the sausage and bean mixture. Top the dish with some lettuce, and the remaining peppers. Serve with rice.
